Last weeks class

Last class kinda hit home for me in a way. Talking about parents. One of my closest friends doesn't know who is father is and he comes to me sometimes and just talks about how he wished he had a father so he had some more guidance in his life and wanted to have memories with his dad. So last class made me think back to all the converstions we had about that. And it makes me realize how luck I am to have great paretns.

Toronto Maple Leafs Win The Stanley Cup!

Just got this email from my Dad, it made me laugh (mostly because I'm sad it can't happen!) and I wanted to share it with you...

Canada was stunned Monday when it was announced that The Stanley Cup will be awarded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, possibly as early as December 6th. The cup will be stripped from from 2008 playoff champions, the Detroit Red Wings, and be awarded to the Leafs, who didn't even make the playoffs. How is this possible, Canadians ask?

Well, the Leafs have formed a coalition with Eastern conference semi-finalists the Montreal Canadians, and conference quarter finalists the Ottawa Senators, now outnumbering the Red Wings. According to current Leaf coach Ron Wilson, "The Red Wings have lost the confidence of the league and should hand the Cup over immediately to our coalition."

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is cutting short a European trip to try to resolve the unprecedented hockey crisis that could force a second playoff series, or see an opposing team coalition take the Cup.

Today

Hey, just wanted to say that one of your questions today.. do you think there is always a power dynamic associated with being a parent?... I feel that the power dynamic of parents and children does not last forever, i feel like when the child reaches an age where they live independently that power dynamic begins to go away. When I was young I felt much more of a power dynamic with my parents but now that I live away from home and do almost everything for myself that power dynamic has deminished.
However, I see the parental power dynamic in my grandmother and my dad. For Christmas this year my Dad just wanted to hang out at home with just our immediate family and not go to the big family function. My grandmother threw a huge fit about how 'when she is dead my dad can miss christmas but not until then, and that he and the rest of us have to go to the big party because it will really hurt her if we don't ' and just because my dad feels so bad about hurting her feelings ( the power in love? )now we are going to the family function she wants.

Impressed Les? I actually talked about something maybe relevant to power!
P.S im coming to your office tommorrow to get the sheet for that essay, i forgot today.
April

Hey

Looks like I should also make an attempt to blog. Let's talk about today's class. Les, you said we could be honest so.. I thought it was boring. But, that is probably because I have no interest in it. I'm not sure why.. I tried to get into it when you were talking but I just kept feeling myself drifting. Politics just aren't my thing, i don't think. No offence to anyone that enjoys it. And as for voting, I don't vote because I don't pay attention to the government. I don't listen to all this politics stuff, so if I voted, it would be a random vote. Which completely defeats the purpose.

Exams

Hey Les,
Just thought that now since its getting to be week 15 I better start posting some blogs to get some marks. I just wanted to talk about how school and exam time has alot of power in my life, it has the power to make me do things like sit and study and prevents me from doing so many other things i would rather be doing. Exams are so stressful and people often let them take over, just wanted to say goodluck studying everyone, i know the nursing programs got a killer load of studying to do and im sure you all do too, best of luck!

The Power in Music (what I think)

Last week in Power class we talked about music and how it can affect us in all sorts of ways.
And we all listen to music for different reason, and we listen to all different styles depending on our moods or personality.
For me music is very important in my everyday life no matter what time or what reason music is always there. Music can excite me, to calm me, to relax me and or to just pass time.
When we were asked to pick a song based around Power I personally found it challenging for the reason I didn’t know what song I wanted to use because I found so many songs that personally touched me and felt that were very soul touching and moving; some of the song where

Josh Groban: You raised me up, Your still you

Phil Collins: Though my eyes, Testify

Celine Dion: The Power of my Love, This Time, Alone

The song that I used was This Time song by Celine Dion which is a very powerful song and touches on real issues that happen to people on a daily bases and we don’t realize it.
Over all I think music help clear the soul on everyone no matter what we listen to.

If you want to listen to the song that i picked here is a link:(hope you like it)

I must agree, its hard to just pick one song that means a lot to you. Everyone has songs they enjoy at different times. The class was a very enjoyable one though.

MUSIC

Music makes the world go round. I really enjoyed Thursday's class. Everyone's choice of songs were great. Really hard to pick just one song...I think I had 12 at one point. Good job everyone. Great tunes!

Les...what would your Power song be?

Proposition 8

I'm absolutely appalled that Prop 8 actually passed. As I mentioned in class on Thursday, it just seems so bizzare. Why all the blind hatred? It just makes me sick.
How fitting, though, that the more I read about it in the paper and online, the more I'm beginning to understand the real power dynamic behind it. Arnie, the Republican governor of California, is working in a Democratic state. "They" see the country feeling empowered with the rise of Obama, so they strike where they can. The GLBT community is an easy target once "They" get the ignorant "Christians" behind them. The GLBT community wants the right to get married if they so wish, so "They" strike fear into the hearts of the "Christians" who want to preserve the sanctity of marriage, and together they take away that right. Now "They" have the power once again.
I have the feeling this will turn into a journal, I just thought I'd share this with everyone else since it makes me so sick. Hopefully I'm not the only one. Also hope the multitude of pronouns didn't confuse you! ;)

Thursday class

In the big picture you really can't blame the western world on hiding as much as possible. You figure theres more teens and young adults who read magazines focused on celebrities instead of the paper. If there was a vote on who is the best musician in north america there would be millions of votes, but why can't people vote for who they think should run the country? Funny how they have impacted our way of life...

Media Influence

I truly enjoyed last weeks lecture, and found it to be extremely informational in the truth about media influence on Western society. It blurs our vision to the truth about our world and simply how corrupt Western leaders can be upon attaining power and control.

Power, control & vulnerability

..
Thursday's class truly idealized the fact that individuals are not able to experience the impact of control and power unless they are vulnerable to it. Being a student in the classroom, we all remained victims to the power that controlled the room, inevitably being the teacher. It was both an intimidating yet eye opening experience for myself, as I hope it was for the rest of you

Unknown blogger

The last blog about power demonstration was written by Spenser Hunter-Bechard

Thursdays class

The thurdays class was a great demontstration of power. Showing that doug the security guard could controll the class by not letting anyone enter the class. I really had me thinking what was going on. Finally when we were aloud to enter the class the way the room was structured and the look on lesses face really showed that he had the power of the class. This was a great power class really made me think that power surrounds us all the time even when we don't know it.

Thursdays Class

I thought Thursdays class with the security guard controlling us outside in the hall way, and Les telling us where to sit and what we could only have at our desk was some what intimidating, and just showed some way control can be used

Ryan Ondercin

Thursday Class

Last Thursdays class was a really good one. The entire set up was done real well Les, you picked a good security guard who played his role to a T. And you controled us well.

It's good to experience control again, it shows how high school and public school were so controlled by authority. All the faculty had the power to tell us how to learn and how to act. Being at college is nice because we are giving the work but we have the power and freedom to do it how we please. Yes we have due dates and marking scheems but we have a lot more freedom now. We are now guided by professors instead of told how to do everything. The freedom to think and do work is a good one and as a student it is nice to have.

This is a quote I read in a magazine earlier this morning

Power can be taken, but not given. The process of the taking is empowerment in itself.

I thought thursdays class was a little intimidating with the security guard standing outside the doorway and when les was ordering everyone where to sit.

New look at 911

If anyone took real interest in Les's speech on last week, try reading the novel "The Conviction of Georrge W. Bush". This book highlights many of Bush's key moments in command and lets you really know how many laws he has broken, and the number of deaths he has caused.

Movie on the weekend

les i took your advice and watched the Matrix in a different way the i would usually watch it. And i agree that if you watch how each character is influenced by power it changes the movie for sure..

Last weeks seminar really got me thinking, and the comment about the Giver was a good one. The giver was a lot like that lecture because of the way they had to recreate society. By recreating society you can name anything you want what you want. So who really says that Les even brought an apple to class?

Craig

Ryan Hiepleh

I thought that movie last week was awesome. It was interesting how "Harry" had so much influence and changed the school completely.

Another great movie

The seminar last week made me think of the movie Zeitgeist. It's a pretty spectacular documentary, and you can watch it online. Just go to http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com to check it out. It's full of details that "They" don't want you to know. You'll never look at the world the same way!

A word of caution, the first part is a little tough to get through if you don't follow any sort of religion, but the second part is dynamite.

Vantage Point

This movie is amazing full of surprises that get you to ask questions. 8 strangers. 8 points of view. But only 1 truth. Full of power dynamics between the cast and the plot just get better and better right though till the end.
“Vantage Point is a mind bending political action-thriller”

When i first watch this movie i didn't fully understand it but the second time around things became clearer. And it open my eyes of what could possible happen when power takes over your mind for the worse and for the better. If you are looking for some fast action and a power story line of world politics this movie is for you.

What should you believe?

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

Crazy movie

I just wanted to let you know about this awesome movie that has a lot of shifts of power, control, manipulation, and all that fun stuff. I had a hard time finding it in all stores but i have a copy now and it is worth seeing for sure. It's called 'Freeway' and it has Kieffer sutherland and some other people you will recognize. Check it out!!!

Good movie

A movie with a lot of interesting power dynamics is 'The Quiet'. It's a little bit racy at times, and it may confuse the heck out of you, but it's a great movie. Especially for those of us who are a little bit cracked, right Les???

Plus, you get to see Elisha Cuthbert parading around in a cheerleader uniform. Down, boys!

Here's a synopsis from imdb.com:
Following the death of her father, a teenage Dot moves into the home of her godparents and their teenage daughter Nina. Dot arrives wrapped up in the silence of being deaf-mute. She finds a different kind of silence waiting for her in her new home, for this home is a place with a dark secret involving Nina and her father. At first, Dot and Nina seem to be polar opposites. However, they gradually realize how much they have in common. Bringing them together catalyzes a series of events in which both reveal their secrets and shed their double lives. A violent consummation almost destroys them. Yet they find hope for the future in the quiet after the storm.

Malcolm X

Quotes by Malcolm X

"When a person places the proper value on freedom, there is nothing under the sun that he will not do to acquire that freedom. Whenever you hear a man saying he wants freedom, but in the next breath he is going to tell you what he won't do to get it, or what he doesn't believe in doing in order to get it, he doesn't believe in freedom. A man who believes in freedom will do anything under the sun to acquire . . . or preserve his freedom."

"You don't have to be a man to fight for freedom. All you have to do is to be an intelligent human being."

"I believe that there will ultimately be a clash between the oppressed and those that do the oppressing. I believe that there will be a clash between those who want freedom, justice and equality for everyone and those who want to continue the systems of exploitation."

"If you're not ready to die for it, put the word 'freedom' out of your vocabulary."

"There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance next time."

“…Early in life I learned that if you want something, you had better make some noise.”

“Power in defense of freedom is greater than power in behalf of tyranny and oppression, because power, real power, comes from our conviction which produces action, uncompromising action.”

Meryl Streep

In the movie The Devil Wears Prada Meryl Streep portrays a head-strong, power hungry, in control business woman who possesses a tremendous amount of power. The character is extremely skilled at keeping that power, and ensuring that it is never taken from her. Throughout the movie she uses her power to transform a humble nerdy young lady into a sophisticated fashion savvy woman. She uses her power to torture those around her, setting impossibly high standards for her employees to adhere to. She also uses the power to ensure her position is safe at her place of business. Meryl Streep portrays a head-strong, power hungry, in control business woman, and the role illustrates a character who is conscious of the importance of power in her life personally, and the lives of those who surround her.
